Even when I did not understand Urdu very well, I was moved by the depth of emotions that lay in the heart of ghazals. The meticulously chosen words serve as intricate patterns that blend in the overall message, seamlessly. One can hardly distinguish the parts from the whole design. There lies the mystery and beauty of ghazals. The meaning transcends beyond individual words and pulls at the heartstrings. When set to haunting melodies and sung by the sweetest voices they simply create magic….
Couple days ago, I suddenly came upon a video on youtube when looking for something totally different. It had a recording of a program that was organized, a while ago, by renowned musicians of India to pay tribute to Jagjit Singh. The ghazal legend, passed away two years ago on 10th October. He had the most rich and beautiful voice I have ever heard. As each of the musicians sang from his various albums, it brought back to life the wonderful melodies and the lovely sentiments they had evoked in my heart decades ago.
My ten-year-old son came by to see what mom was listening to. I briefly explained. I could not describe in words what a wonderful voice he had. So I had him listen to the ghazal below: ( I think he has fallen in love with the ghazal already!)
Ishq Kijiye Phir Samajhiye Zindagi Kya Cheez Hai
Unse Nazar Kya Milin Roshan Fizaein Ho Gayee
Aaj Jana Pyaar Ki Jaadugari Kya Cheez Hai
Khulti Zulfon Ne Sikhayee Mausamon Ko Shayaree
Jhukti Aankhon Ne Bataya Maikashi Kya Cheez Hai
Hum Labon Se Keh Na Paaye, Unse Haal-E-Dil Kabhi
Aur Woh Samjhe Nahin Ye Khamoshi Kya Cheez Hai
Love unconditionally to discover the true enjoyment of life.
One glimpse of those enchanting eyes has brightened the whole ambience,
This change is only possible due the magic touch of love
Her looking away in shyness, allures to the point of intoxication.
And she misunderstands the power of silence
Love unconditionally to discover the true enjoyment of life.
