Naam gum jayega

Like many of us, I have heard this song many times earlier. I loved the melodious voices that sang them, the tune, the words, and the rhythm. But yesterday, when I remembered the song in the depths of sorrow, I discovered a new meaning in the words that filled my heart with hope.

Emotions are the unstoppable rivulets that sweep us to the threshold of wisdom. Nothing can express emotions as well as the human voice.  Voice is also our identity.

नाम गुम जाएगा,
चेहरा ये बदल जाएगा
मेरी आवाज़ ही पहचान है,
गर याद रहें

Naam ghum jayega
Chehra yeh badal jayega
Meri awaaz hee pehechhan hain
Gar yaad rahen

My name will be lost in oblivion
My face will change over time
My voice will offer identification
If it is remembered

वक्त के सितम कम हसीन नहीं,
आज हैं यहाँ कल कहीं नहीं
वक्त से परे अगर मिल गए कहीं, मेरी आ…

Waqt ke sitam kam hasin nahin
Aaj hain yahan kaal kahin nahin
Waqt se pare agar mil gaye kahin
Meri awaaz hee phehechhan hain
Gar yaad rahen

Beautiful is the vagary of Time
What is present today, is nowhere tomorrow
With the passing of Time, we might meet again
My voice will offer identification
If it is remembered.

जो गुज़र गई कल की बात थी,
उम्र तो नहीं एक रात थी
रात का सिरा अगर फिर मिले कहीं,
मेरी आवाज़ ही …

Jo guzar gayin kaal ki baat thee
Umr to nahin ek raat thee
Raat ka sira agar phir mile kahin
Meri awaaz hi pehechan hain
Gar yaad rahen

What has passed is the story of yesterday
It was not a lifetime but just one night
If we meet again at the dead of night
My voice will offer identification
If it is remembered

दिन ढले जहाँ रात पास हो,
जिंदगी की लौ उँची कर चलो
याद आए गर कभी जी उदास हो,
मेरी आवाज़ ही …

Din dhale jahan, raat paas hon
Zindagi ki lau, uchhi kar chalo
Yaad aye gar kabhi, ji udaas hon
Meri awaaz hi pehechan hain
Gar yaad rahen

When the day is fading, night comes close
Keep the flame of life, steady and upright
When you remember me and your heart is sad
My voice will offer identification
If it is remembered
